Baylor Teams Sweep Rotary Tennis Titles

For the second straight year Baylor school swept the A Division team titles at the 56th annual Chattanooga Rotary Tennis Championship Saturday at Baylor.

The Baylor Boys’ edged St.

Xavier and MBA, while the Baylor girls edged GPS and Mountain Brook.

In the B Divisions, Knox Catholic won the boys’ title, while Randolph (Ala.) claimed the girls’ crown.

Boys’ A: Depth proved to be the difference for the victorious Baylor program as the Red Raider boys’ claimed Nos. 3-6 singles titles and one doubles title for 20.5 points, while St. Xavier (Ky.) was second (17) with one singles and a pair of doubles championships.

MBA was third (16) and McCallie was fourth (9) in the eight-team field.

Baylor singles champs were Jackson Pride (#3), Marko Mandic (#4), Erod Roddy (#5) and Jack Gray (#6).

Baylor has now won a record 30 boys team titles since the tourney started in 1957 ...

McCallie is second with 16.

Lots of Talent: In a star-studded, entertaining No.1 Boys’ singles bracket, No.2 seeded Aarron Jumonville (MBA) defeated No.4 Anderson Scarpa (Baylor), 6-4, 3-6, 6-2. Jumonville edged Scarpa 10 days ago (April 4) in the MBA-Baylor dual match won by MBA also at Baylor.

In the semis, Jumonville had to go three sets to stop No.3 Trey Carter (Mtn Brook), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, while Scarpa defeated No.1 seeded Alex Gormet (St. Xavier), 6-3, 6-4.

Will Meet Again: In two weeks (April 27-28), Baylor, St. Xavier, MBA, McCallie and Memphis University School will compete in the Carter Invitational at MBA

40 Years Ago:  Baylor scord 35 of a maximum 36 team points in 1972

Girls’ A:  Baylor had two singles and two doubles champs for 20 points, while Mountain Brook (Ala.) and GPS tied for second with 15 points each.

First Title - Worth the Wait: At No.1 singles, UTC-bound Kelsey Coots (Huntsville) defeated Baylor’s Samantha Caswell, 6-2, 4-6, 6-4 for her first championship in the A division. She also won the B Division crown at No.1 singles as a freshman in 2009.

Coots came here as a seventh grader and lost to Rotary champion and eventual D-II state doubles champion Brandi Cordell (Baylor) in the first round, 6-1, 6-0. In 2010, Coots lost to eventual state champion Sarah Evans (GPS) in the No.1 finals.

Coots and Huntsville also played in the B Division in 2008-09-11.

Another 7th Grader: Fifty years ago, Baylor 7th grader Zan Guerry won the No.1 singles titles in 1962 in the first of his six straight Rotary titles at No.1 singles.

Rally Cap: In the No.2 singles semis, Emma McCallie (GPS) ralled from down a set and trailed 1-5 to defeat Harper Caswell (Baylor), 2-6, 7-6 (3), 6-4. The cross-town rivals had split two previous meetings this season.

 

First Girls' Rotary:  1968 – a girls division was created in 1968 and GPS wins all six singles and three doubles … Laura Duffy wins the first of her two singles titles …

Most Titles: GPS leads with 13 followed by Baylor (9) and Marist (8)

1977 – Girls: 35th anniversary -  In the No.1 finals, Wendy White (Westminster) hands three-time state champ Susan Hill (Red Bank) her only singles loss in high school … White also won the Rotaryin 1978 ... Susan and sister, Carolyn, won at No.1 doubles in 1977.

 

B Division Boys’: Knox Catholic maintained its three-point lead after day one and claimed the team title with 21 points, while runner-up Univ. School of Jackson had 18 with Science Hill (13) in third.

Knox Catholic put five players in the singles finals with two champions as well as a pair of doubles winners. Science Hill had only two players (both champions) in the singles finals and one doubles team finalist which placed second.

Singles Champion: Michael Chen (Science Hill) claimed the No.1 singles crown with a 6-4, 6-3 win against John Batson of Knox Catholic.

Marathon Matches: Ryan Becker of Science Hill won the consolation title at No. 2 singles with thee, 3-set matches.

Eventual runner-up Ashton McGuire (USJ) defeated Becker in the opening round, 3-6, 6-1, 6-2. Becker then beat Barrett Shock (CCS), 7-6 (7-4), 3-6, 10-4 in the conso semis and topped Michael Bowden (CAK), 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 in the conso finals. 

B Division Girls’: In the closest team race, Randolph (15) edged Science Hill (14) and Siegel (13) for the title.

Randolph had singles champs at Nos. 5-6 and No.2 doubles.

In the No.1 singles finals, Allison Storie of Science Hill defeated Ashlee Boles (Siegel), 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.

Woman Killed In Early-Morning Wreck On Thrasher Pike

A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Thrasher Pike early Saturday morning. Soddy Daisy Police Chief Phillip Hamrick said a female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. City May Move Forward On $47 Million Wilcox Tunnel Project

City officials may move forward on a $47 million project to upgrade the narrow Wilcox Tunnel through Missionary Ridge.
