Notre Dame Wins 5-2 Over Signal Mountain

Tuesday, April 17, 2012

The Notre Dame boys soccer team earned a big District 7-A/AA win Tuesday night against visiting Signal Mountain and they did it in convincing fashion.  Notre Dame led 3-1 at the half and went on to win 5-2.

The win gives Notre Dame the top spot in District 7-A/AA with a 2-0 record.  They play at district rival CCS on Friday.  CCS tied Signal Mountain 1-1 earlier this year.

Wes Blanton scored one of this two goals early in the game to give Notre Dame at 1-0 lead.

Signal Mountain's Andy Rosen scored one of his two goals to tie the game at 1-1, 15 minutes in.   His goal came after a scramble for the ball in the box.  The ball just barely crossed the goal line for Signal's first goal.

Notre Dame would score four straight goals before Signal Mountain scored the final goal of the game in the 73rd minute.

Blanton had one of those four goals for Notre Dame.  The others were scored by Blaize DiStefano, Rick Prochazka and Baggio Card.

Signal's final goal was scored by Rosen.

Notre Dame head coach Jim Schemerhorn told his team they needed to keep playing hard in the second half even though they were up 3-1.

"We just had to keep our composure and keep playing," he said. "I thought we were playing well.  I told them at the half to keep it up.  They needed to keep up the intensity in the second half."

The win improves Notre Dame's overall record to 7-6-1.  The Irish have played a tough schedule including some of the top teams in Georgia.

Notre Dame's John Hoffer played goal in the first half and Tim Barnes played the second half.

This was the final district game for Signal Mountain bringing their district record to 2-1-1  They will play Bradley Central on Thursday.
