Lee's Barber Named SSAC Player Of The Year

COLUMBUS, Ga. - Lee senior second baseball Blake Barber was not only named to the All-SSAC first team, he was also selected by the coaches as conference player of the year at the pre-tournament banquet on Wednesday evening.

Barber paced the SSAC in hitting with a .438 average. He also knocked in 52 runs, scored 57 times, blasted seven homers, ripped 14 doubles and legged out six triples.

Lee placed five players on the All-SSAC first team. Hurler Kris Hall headed the list along with first baseman Roberto Reyes, relief pitcher Jose Samayoa and designated hitter Corey Davis.

Reyes was named Lee's Champion of Character selection, while outfielder Brady Renner earned a spot on the Golden Glove team and pitcher Kyle Briner and outfielder James Fowlkes were named to the All-Freshman club. Outfielder Mike Moore, Edmanuel Rivera and catcher Jorge Saez were All-SSAC second teamers.

"I was pleased to see this many of our players honored," said coach Mark Brew. "This group has worked hard and are being rewarded for their effort." The Flames will open play in the SSAC tourney on Thursday afternoon at 4 p.m. and will face the University of Mobile in the eight-team, double elimination tourney.

Woman Killed In Early-Morning Wreck On Thrasher Pike

A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Thrasher Pike early Saturday morning. Soddy Daisy Police Chief Phillip Hamrick said a female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to Erlanger Hospital by LifeForce helicopter about 3:15 a.m. The driver was transported by Hamilton County EMS. It is believed he had non-life threatening injuries. ... City May Move Forward On $47 Million Wilcox Tunnel Project

City officials may move forward on a $47 million project to upgrade the narrow Wilcox Tunnel through Missionary Ridge. The City Council on Tuesday is to consider a resolution to apply for a $25 million federal TIGER grant. The city would still have to come up with $21,825,000 through "local funds or grants."
