William E. “Bill” Southerland,81, of Cleveland, Tn., died Sunday, April 22, 2012 at the family residence.

Mr. Southerland was the son of the late Ruby Clayton Southerland and Williard W. Southerland; and was also preceded in death by his first wife, JoAnn Southerland; and his son, Roger Southerland.

Mr. Southerland owned and operated Bill’s Barber and Styles Barber Shop in Chattanooga for more than 50 years. He also retired from the Chattanooga Post Office after several years of service. He was a U. S. Veteran serving in the Army and the Air Force. He enjoyed his volunteer work including serving in the Baptist Associations program “Helping Hands”. Mr. Southerland was a member of the Phillippi Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Alice R. Hooker Southerland of Cleveland; his daughters, Sunny Jackson and her husband David of Chattanooga, Tracy L. Hames and her husband Cyle of Cleveland and Donna Mowery of Knoxville; his sons, Mikel B. Southerland and his wife Susan of Chattanooga, daughter-in-law, Pam Southerland, of Rossville, Reverend Sammy Hooker and his wife Debbie of Cleveland, Johnny Hooker also of Cleveland and Steve Hooker and his wife Diane of Nashville; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; his sisters, Joy Ring of Phoenix, Betty Neal and her husband Kenny of LaHabra, Cal. and Jewel Murphy of Chattanooga; and several nieces and nephews.

The Remembrance of Life Service will be conducted Thursday, April 26 at 4 p.m. from the Phillippi Baptist Church with Reverend Sammy Hooker and Reverend Mike Manning officiating. Interment will follow in the Sunset Memorial Gardens with grandsons serving as pallbearers. Military honors will be given. A Dove release will conclude the services.

The body may be viewed at the Church prior to the service from 3-4 p.m. Thursday, April 26.

The North Ocoee Chapel of the Jim Rush Funeral Homes has charge of the arrangements.


Heuser, Valetta Jean (Rock Spring)

Valetta Jean Heuser, 93, of Rock Spring, died on Monday, May 20, 2013 in a local hospital. James G. “Jaybird” Henderson, Sr., 66, of Chickamauga, died on Sunday, May 19, 2013 at his residence following a three-year battle with cancer. Hayden Lamar Lasley

Hayden Lamar Lasley, 60, of Hixson, died on Monday, May 20, 2013.   He was a longtime area girls softball coach for more than 35 years. Rogers, 20, Shot Twice While Standing On His Porch

A 20-year-old man was shot twice while standing on his porch on Monday night. At approximately 8:44 p.m., Chattanooga Police responded to a shooting that occurred in the 1900 block of Walker Street.
