  • Monday, April 9, 2012
The annual Harold Alper, MD, Endowment Humanitarian Community Lecture Series and Award presentation was held on March 30 featuring Jonathan Amiel, M.D, of Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and New York State Psychiatric Institute, and Fernando Windemuller, M.D., a third year resident in the Pediatrics Residency Program at the University of Tennessee College of Medicine Chattanooga.

The family of the late Harold Alper, MD, has honored his memory and humanitarian spirit by establishing an endowment fund with the Erlanger Baroness Foundation and University of Tennessee.
The endowment provides funding for an annual Harold Alper, MD, Resident Humanitarian Award, as well as an annual Harold Alper, MD, Humanitarian Lecture Series.  The award is presented to a graduating resident who has consistently demonstrated qualities of integrity, respect and compassion in the care of patients and their families throughout residency training in Chattanooga

Dr. Windemuller entered the program on July 1, 2009, after graduating from the University of Illinois – Champaign.  The Pediatric Curriculum Committee unanimously nominated Dr. Windemuller because “he does not leave any stone unturned to assure that his patients are receiving the best care regardless of race, culture, creed, or socioeconomic status.  He is an advocate for the poor, underserved, Hispanic population and has a special passion for recent immigrants and appreciates the challenges they face.  He helps them navigate services in the community and encourages children to maximize the opportunities they have in this country.  Dr. Windemuller truly demonstrates the qualities of integrity, caring, respect, empathy, and compassion – a pediatrician extraordinaire.”

Physicians, nurses, residents, medical students and other healthcare professionals also attended a lecture prior to recognizing the nominees and award recipient, entitled "The Doctor’s Narrative: Reflection as a Means to Maintaining Humanism in Medicine" by Dr. Amiel, an Assistant Dean for Curricular Affairs at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons and an Attending Psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute’s Washington Heights Community Service.

Dr. Amiel obtained his bachelor's degree in biology from Yale University and his M.D. from Columbia, where he was a member of the Association of American Medical Colleges’ (AAMC) Organization of Student  representatives and was selected to the Gold Humanism Honor Society and Alpha Omega Alpha. Dr. Amiel graduated from the Columbia/NYSPI psychiatry residency, where he was appointed to AAMC’s Organization of Resident Representatives (ORR) in 2008. At the AAMC, he serves on the steering committee of the Group on Educational Affairs and chairs the ORR for 2011-2012. He also serves on the national advisory committee for the Gold Humanism Honor Society and chairs its Task Force on Residents.
