Graduating Leadership Fellows Take New Skills To Classrooms

Wednesday, May 16, 2012

27 Hamilton County educators have recently completed their 12-month tenure as Leadership Fellows and passed the baton to a class of 30 newly-selected Fellows.

Sponsored by the Public Education Foundation in partnership with the Hamilton County Department of Education, Leadership Fellows has now produced more than 400 graduates, including 41 principals, 42 assistant principals and 59 teacher leaders such as school-based instructional coaches and lead teachers.  So far this year, five newly promoted Hamilton County principals are former Leadership Fellows.

“Every year, 60 to 70 teachers apply to become Leadership Fellows because they want to develop skills and build relationships to help them take an active role in moving their schools forward.  This year’s class has been very strong,” said Ann Kilcher, PEF’s senior consultant with the Leadership initiative.

Leadership Fellows participate in a rigorous year of training in addition to their usual teaching duties to prepare for various roles leading positive change in their schools.  The program was established in 1999 with funding from the Annenberg Foundation.  Its purpose is to give emerging school leaders the skills and knowledge they need to participate in decision-making and school improvement. The program involves monthly workshops, job shadowing, school visits, mentoring and study groups. The Fellows also participate in leadership projects and presentations, and create a leadership portfolio demonstrating what they have learned through this program.

“My parents both went through Leadership Fellows, so I had some idea about what to expect.  But I’ve grown more professionally in the past 12 months as an LF as I have in four years of teaching,” said recent graduate Tyler Rich of Red Bank High.

Another Fellow, Hilary Smith of Howard, said, “I’m a school counselor and I hate to be out of the building and away from my kids.  Leadership Fellows has been one of the most rewarding professional development opportunities I’ve ever had; it’s worth the time away because everyone has a responsibility for educational leadership in our school, not just teachers.”

Scandals At Home And Abroad

Since my hip operation and time in recovery, I have tried to set aside things that are insignificant to me and to average Americans. Don't get me wrong here. What these people are doing (Bengahzi) is despicable be they left or right wing, and they have been doing it (both sides) for a long time. But the dirty deeds themselves carry little weight as to what they mean to you or me. ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: 50 Facts About Our Bodies

Maybe 20 years ago I became entranced by a book called “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.” It was co-authored by a surgeon, Paul Brand, and a Christian writer, Phillip Yancey, and gave one specific after another about the human body and how only God could have created such a miraculous machine. Today the book is a classic and I have marveled ever since over how unbelievable human ... (click for more)
