Local Rower Helps Notre Dame Take Big East Championship

Joanna Poinsatte of Hixson, a junior at the University of Notre Dame and former rower for Chattanooga Junior Rowing, is a member of the University of Notre Dame womens’ rowing team which won the Big East championship last weekend in Princeton, New Jersey.  

Ms. Poinsatte rowed in the womens’ first varsity 8 race; the victory helped Notre Dame achieve their 9th straight Big East championship.  

The Notre Dame women will be competing next week as one of the 16 teams selected to participate in the 2012 NCAA Division I Women’s Rowing Championships on May 25-27, also in Princeton.  

Ms. Ponsatte is also one of five CJR alumni who are currently on the roster of NCAA Division I womens’ rowing teams.

Woman Killed In Early-Morning Wreck On Thrasher Pike

A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Thrasher Pike early Saturday morning. Soddy Daisy Police Chief Phillip Hamrick said a female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. She was transported to Erlanger Hospital by LifeForce helicopter about 3:15 a.m. The driver was transported by Hamilton County EMS. It is believed he had non-life threatening injuries. ... City May Move Forward On $47 Million Wilcox Tunnel Project

City officials may move forward on a $47 million project to upgrade the narrow Wilcox Tunnel through Missionary Ridge. The City Council on Tuesday is to consider a resolution to apply for a $25 million federal TIGER grant. The city would still have to come up with $21,825,000 through "local funds or grants."
