Virginia Jo Hughes Gray, 72, peacefully died on May 16, 2012 after a long and brave battle with cancer.  

She will always be remembered by and live in the hearts and minds of her family and many friends.

Virginia was a life-long Chattanoogan.  She graduated from Central High School in 1958, married in 1960, and, after staying at home with her two children until the mid-70’s, earned a college degree and started a 25-year career at Provident Life Insurance Co. (now Unum), climbing from a programmer assistant to a system analyst at her retirement.

She enjoyed her retirement, traveling with husband and friends around the United States, Canada, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Europe.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James A. and Dorothy I. Hughes as well as her brother James Hughes.

She is survived by her husband, Tom, daughter, Julie Light (Scott) of Phoenix, Az., son, Russell (Beth) of Chattanooga, five perfect grandchildren - Spencer and Grayson Light, Jack, Parker and Emma Gray, Brother George Hughes (Yvonne), and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be held at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel on Saturday, May 19 from 2-4 p.m. and from 6-8 p.m.

A private service will be held at a later date. 

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in Virginia’s name to The Oral Cancer Foundation, 3419 Via Lido, #205, Newport Beach, Ca. 92663.
