Pastor Emeritus Melvin Jordan, 80, of Chattanooga, died on Friday, April 27, 2012.
He was the pastor of the Mount Canaan Baptist Church for 40 years. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and spent most of his working days at the Wheland Foundry until he was called to Pastor the Mount Canaan Baptist Church.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Deacon Green and Mahalia Allen Jordan; brothers, James Earl and Green (Doris) Allen; and sister, Ethelean Swopes.
Survivors include his wife, Maggie Jordan; sons, Dr. Ternae T. (Angela) Jordan, Sr., Chattanooga, and Michael (Stephanie) Jordan, Atlanta; daughters, Gail Jordan and Kim (Terrance) Weaver, both of Chattanooga; brothers, Johnnie (Odean) Jordan, Detroit, Arthur (Willie-deceased) Jordan, Athens, Ala., and Thurman Jordan, Huntsville; sisters, Laura Frederick, Chattanooga, Rose (John) Horton, Athens, Ala., and Georgiaetta Hefley, Huntsville, and a host of grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
The body will lie in state on Friday, May 4, from 1-4 p.m. at Taylor Funeral Home.
Visitation and a memorial service will be from 6-8 p.m. at Highland Park Baptist Church, 1907 Bailey Ave., with Pastor Bobby Hampton officiating.
Funeral services will be on Saturday, May 5, at noon at Highland Park Baptist Church with his brother, Pastor Johnnie Jordan officiating and his son, Dr. Ternae T. Jordan, Sr., as the eulogist.
Burial will be on Monday, May 7, at 10:30 a.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery.
