Hits 96, WDOD-FM, has received over 160 entries for The Running of the Chihuahuas 5. The previous record of 100 was surpassed on Wednesday.
Originally set at 128, the field of 160 Chihuahuas will compete for the crown and distinction of being “The Fastest Chihuahua in Chattanooga.” Event organizer and afternoon personality, Brad Steiner says, “With 160 slots filled, we are compiling a list of alternate racers that can step in should any of the Chihuahuas not be able to compete.” Alternate racers are being taken currently online at hits96.com and on a first-come first-serve basis on the day of the race.
Station Manager Danny Howard says, “We truly appreciate the community wrapping their collective arms around our event, making it larger and larger as the days go by.” Steiner jokingly adds, “Soon, we’ll petition to make this a national holiday.” Spectators can join Saturday when the event begins at 2 p.m. Music from national recording artists Megan & Liz, Outasight, and BoysLikeGirls starts at 3 p.m. and the race begins at 6 p.m.
Registration for alternate racers is open and available at www.hits96.com. Spectators are encouraged to participate for free on Saturday at the First Tennessee Pavilion. If interested, sponsors are being accepted by Jeff Fontana, sales manager, at 321-6200. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Goodwill Assistance Dog Academy.
