Forrest Edges Grace Baptist, 4-2, In Class A Opener

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. -- Forrest rallied for three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning Tuesday night and defeated Grace Baptist, 4-2, in the BlueCross Spring Fling.

Grace will play in the losers bracket on Wednesday against University School of Jackson (31-12) at approximately 1 p.m. eastern. USJ lost to Decatur County, 15-0, Tuesday night.

Tory Helton and Maddy Horton each had two hits for Grace Baptist (27-8), which was making its fourth appearance in the Class A state tournament. Helton and Erika Goodman each had an RBI.

Adrean Jordan, Brooke Herron and Savannah Brothers had two hits apiece for Forrest (28-7). Herron and Brothers had two RBI each.

Helton was the losing pitcher, giving up nine hits, striking out six and walking four.

Winning pitcher Kaitlyn Toombs gave up eight hits, struck out six and walked none.

"We just did not play well defensively and they took advantage,'' Grace coach Tina Walker said.

Grace had posted a 9-6 record coming in5o the state tournament.

"We were the experienced team and I thought we would be ready,'' Walker said. "Instead, we were tight and our nerves went against us.

"We will have to play relaxed tomorrow and just play our game.''
