Red Bank Eliminated By Pigeon Forge, 4-3

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – It was quite a post-season experience for the Red Bank Lions, but the 2012 baseball season came to an end at Blackman High School Wednesday morning with a 4-3 loss to Pigeon Forge.

Hagen Wilkey, who had five runs batted in last Saturday in a stirring comeback against Sequoyah in the Secional game that put them in the state tournament, homered in the second inning as the Lions grabbed an early 2-0 lead.

The Tigers countered with single runs in the second and third inning to tie the score before taking the lead with two more in the bottom of  the sixth.

Red Bank came back to score one run in the top of the seventh and had the bases loaded, but reliever Wil Crowe struck out the side to preserve the victory for starting pitcher James Jinnette.

“The breaks just didn’t go our way,” said Red Bank coach Trey Hicks after his team had concluded its season at 20-23.

“I told our guys how proud of them I was for the heart they showed in the last couple of weeks.  Contrary to what some people thought, we did deserve to be here this week, but that’s just how the game goes sometimes.

“Raunel Perez is our only senior and I’m hoping we can make another run next year,” Hicks added.

Jinnette was the winner after allowing four hits in six innings.  He also walked two while recording 10 strikeouts.  Crowe walked two after coming in for the final inning, but also had the three Ks to earn the save.

While Wilkey had the biggest hit, Ryder Pierce, Blake Turner and Perez all finished with one hit apiece.

Wilkey suffered the defeat after allowing all four runs – including only two that were earned – while walking two and striking out six.

Roy Exum: The Colonel: ‘Tell My Sons’

In the Broadway play, “The Civil War,” there is an emotional song called “Tell My Father,” the words that a dying Union soldier on a distant battlefield asked to be delivered when the other troops got back home.
