World War II Veteran Worked For Electric Power Board

Carl J. Varnell, 87, of Chattanooga, died on Thursday, May 24, 2012. 

A lifelong resident of the Chattanooga area, he was a member of the Brainerd Baptist Church and was retired from the Electric Power Board. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Navy. 

He was the son of the late Fred E. and Bertha Lee Thomas Varnell. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Jeanne Varnell and his brother, Neil Varnell. 

Later in life he started a small business as a potter which he loved. 

Survivors include two sons, David (Jan) Varnell, Hixson; and Mark Varnell, Chattanooga; granddaughter, Becky (Ty) Geren, Chattanooga; two great-grandchildren, Kiera and Connor Geren; two nephews, Louis Varnell and Alan Berghiemer. 

A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 30, in the Chattanooga National Cemetery with Dr. Chris Moses officiating. 

There will be no visitation at the funeral home. 

The family would like to give a special thank you to his caregivers at St. Barnabas, Memorial Hospital, Lifecare of Hixson and the Summit View Senior Living for all the care and love you showed the last few months. 

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions may be made to the American Diabetes Association at diabetes.org
