Philip Kennedy

Brother Philip David Kennedy was born in Trenton, New Jersey, on June 10, 1928 to Hugh Joseph Kennedy (deceased) and Jane Theresa O'Hara Kennedy (deceased).

He joined the Congregation of Alexian Brothers in June, 1946 and thus began a career that saw him serve the Alexian Brothers ministries in Elizabeth New Jersey, St. Louis Missouri, Chicago and Elk Grove Village Illinois. In 1975 he earned a Masters in Public Health (Hospital Administration) from Yale University. From there he went on to a brilliant and successful career as hospital administrator. In 1983 he began his ministry as CEO and president of the Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village. He was elected to several terms on the Alexian Brothers Provincial Council and was active in the Chicago and State of Illinois hospital leadership.

The first stroke in 1997 ended his career in administration. Brother Philip volunteered his services where possible, and retired to the Signal Mountain Brothers Community in 2005. He humbly accepted care provided at Alexian Inn (Assisted Living) and most recently at the Alexian Health and Rehabilitation Center.

Brother Philip is survived by his sister, Jane Kennedy of Signal Mountain, and his brothers, Donald Kennedy of Quakertown, Pa., and Richard Kennedy of Reno, Ne.

Visitation will begin at the Alexian Village St. Augustine Chapel, at 1 p.m. on Monday, May 7. A Vigil Service will be held at 7 p.m.

Visitation continues until the Funeral Mass at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, May 8, with Bishop Richard Stika, DD of Knoxville officiating.  Burial will be at the Alexian Brothers plot in Illinois following services there.

A donation in the name of Brother Philip Kennedy can be made to the Alexian Village Employee Fund, or to the Alexian Village Employee Scholarship Fund. A donation to the Alexian Brothers Foundation will assist in all Senior Ministries sponsored by the Brothers.
