Avid Golfer Was Active For Many Years In Golf Groups, Events & Tournaments

Helen Jessica Miller Mullenix, of Chattanooga, died on Monday, May 7, 2012.  Mrs. Mullenix was 91 years old.

She was born in Dalton, Ga., the daughter of the late Walter Baxter Miller and Martha Petty Miller Michel.  Helen was also preceded in death by her husband of 46 years, James Burton Mullenix, Sr.  She was a communicant of St. Peter’s Episcopal Church for over 50 years.

Helen was an avid golfer, having played in many local and state events.  She belonged to the Chattanooga Golf and Country Club for 55 years where she held many offices in the club’s golf groups and won several golf handicap events. 

Mrs. Mullenix played in the Women’s Tennessee Golf Association Tournaments for over 20 years, serving as secretary for two years and a board member for two terms. She was also a member for 35 years in the Local Chattanooga Women’s Golf Association, having served as secretary for this group for two terms.   

Helen is survived by her two sons, James Burton Mullenix, Jr. and Walter Bruce Mullenix; sister, Walnita Miller Russell; sister-in-law, Ruby Mullenix Dykes; nephew, James O. Russell, Jr.; niece, Amanda R. Taylor; cousins, Jane McSpadden Burke, Martha McSpadden Brumfield, Martha Petty Henry and Pauline Petty Driggins; and a very special godchild, Gaye Lindsey DeMars.

The body will lie in state where the family will receive friends from 5-9 p.m. on Thursday, May 10, and again from 9-10 a.m. on Friday, May 11, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 848 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, Tn. 37415.

The services for Helen will follow at 10 am on Friday at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church with The Reverend and Honorable Sam Payne officiating.  A private burial will follow her celebration of life service with Steve Bean, Ed DeMars, Kirk Eidson, David Hulse, John Neblett, John Rollins, Jim Russell and Scott Taylor serving as pallbearers.

The family would like to thank the entire staff at Memorial Hospital for the extreme kindness extended during the last two weeks in the MICU care facility, Dr. Hamilton and The Hospice of Chattanooga Memorial facility. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mrs. Mullenix’s name to St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 848 Ashland Terrace, Chattanooga, Tn. 37415. 

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tn. 37343.

Dog Fighting Operation Uncovered On Talledega Avenue

City May Move Forward On $47 Million Wilcox Tunnel Project

City officials may move forward on a $47 million project to upgrade the narrow Wilcox Tunnel through Missionary Ridge.
