Donald Frank Andrews, 63, of Chattanooga, died on June 11, 2012 in a local hospital.

Donald was born in Hartselle, Ala. He received his AA from Florida College and married the love of his life in 1970 in Bessemer, Ala. He received his bachelor's and master's degrees in English from the University of Alabama and his PhD from the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. 

They moved to Chattanooga in 1980 to work at Chattanooga State where he ultimately became the dean of the Humanities and Fine Arts Division. He was known as an ardent supporter of his faculty, a staunch defender of academic freedom, a dedicated proponent of student learning, and a trustworthy colleague and friend. His interest and counsel helped his students and colleagues develop both professionally and personally.  

His evident Christian faith and godly example provided those around him, regardless of faith background, with both an anchor and a touchstone for their own lives. He and his family worshiped at the North Terrace Church of Christ where he served as an elder for nearly 20 years. To all who knew him, he was a man of abiding faith who was devoted to his family.

Donald was relied upon by many for his wise counsel, patience, and sense of humor. He was a mentor and a peacekeeper in all areas of his life.


He was preceded in death by his father, Frank Andrews.

Donald is survived by his loving wife of 41 years, Linda Andrews; son Clint (Ginger) Andrews of Stillwater, Oklahoma; son Brian (Sarah) Andrews of Oak Ridge, Tn.; daughter Staci (Ryan) Lanning of Tampa, Florida; nine grandchildren: Emma, Bethany, Julia, Victoria, Bonnie, Abigail, Zachary, Baby Boy Andrews, Baby Girl Lanning, mother, Corine Andrews of Decatur, Ala.; brother, Thomas (Terry) Andrews of Bell, Florida; sister, Kathy (Glen) Mathis of Athens, Alabama; and many loving relatives.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 13, in the Heritage Funeral Home Chapel with Ministers, Perry Hurst and Charlie Brackett officiating.
