Tuesday, June 19, 2012

TheCreativeUnderground, a community based arts initiative, will present a summer series of performances at The Camp House, 1427 Williams St., starting on Saturday, June 30.  The series is called Eclectic, a jam and open mic session where local singers, musicians and spoken word artists get together for impromptu collaborations and planned performances.

“After our successful run of The Song-Book Series in collaboration with the Bessie Smith Cultural Center and April community performances for Jazz Appreciation Month, I’ve gotten an overwhelming request from community members to bring more live musical and spoken word performances showcasing our city’s local wealth of talent,” said Shane Morrow, creative director of TCU, “So the creation of Eclectic is our response. “  The series will run until August at The Camp House.

Eclectic will feature different mixtures of musical genres, from soul to country, paying homage to the original artists as well as bringing forth an array of individuals to the stage.  The June installment will pay a tribute to legendary musical icons that have we have recently lost like Donna Summer, Whitney Houston, Michael Jackson, Koko Taylor and other noted performers.

“Their body of work is the songbook to our souls," said Mr. Morrow. "Paying a musical homage to them is our way of saying thank you for sharing your gifts to us all."  He addedthat Eclectic will have something for everyone.

Doors open at 8 p.m. with the performance beginning at 8:30 p.m.  Admission is $15.  For more information about TheCreativeUnderground or/and Eclectic, visit www.tcuchatt.com.
