Steve Robinson, president of the Signal Mountain Genealogical Society welcomes poet Mary Campbell Monroe.

One of the Chattanooga area’s more distinguished poets, Mary Campbell Monroe, gave a reading of her poetry at the Signal Mountain Genealogical Society.

Organizers said, "Ms. Monroe’s poetry paints delightful word-pictures of those familiar places we all hold closely in our memories and in our hearts.  In the finest tradition of the poet, Ms. Monroe is able to penetrate the everyday and bring to life long-forgotten recollections; the smell of pipe tobacco that clings to a father’s vest, the sound of children playing in the yard, or the feel of a front-porch swing on a hot summer night."

Mary Monroe grew up in Chattanooga and as a young lady wrote copy for WDEF radio station before moving to Los Angeles. While in California, she attended Pierce College where she honed her creative writing skills.  For 54 years she lived in California. Fortunately, for poetry lovers she has now returned to her Chattanooga roots.

The members of the Signal Mountain Genealogical Society join with other members of the community in saluting Mary Monroe, an exceptional poet.

The Signal Mountain Genealogical Society meets on the first Tuesday of each month at the Walden Town Hall. Meetings begin at 1 p.m. and visitors are always welcome.
