Frank Eugene “Gene” Slayton, Jr., of Harrison, died on Tuesday, June 19, 2012.  He was 84.

Gene was a 1946 graduate of Central High School and served our country in the U. S. Navy. He retired from DuPont Corporation after 32 years of service.  Gene was in automobile sales for several years at John Hicks Motors.  He was a member of Bayside Baptist Church and served as a volunteer with Chattanooga Prison Ministries for more than 20 years.  Gene was an avid Big Orange fan and served as president of Chattanooga Big Orange Club for several years.  He was a member of Whorley Masonic Lodge # 601 F&AM for over 50 years.  Gene was a former pilot and aviation enthusiast, drove stock cars in his earlier years and won the first race ever run at old Boyd Speedway in East Ridge.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Frank E. Slayton, Sr., and Myrtle Hopkins Slayton; and his sister, Barbara Robertson.

Gene is survived by his wife of 48 years, Charlotte Massey Slayton; daughter, Linda Vaughn of Hixson and his son, F. E. “Trey” Slayton, III of Chattanooga; several grandchildren and cousins; his former wife, Christina Slayton; his nieces, Linda Ingram, Marilyn Fielding (Alan), Diane Witten (Brooks) and Teresa Delcore (Loyd) and sister-in-law, Merle Massey.

The family will receive friends from 3-7 p.m. on Friday, June 22, and 12-1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, at the North Chapel.

Services for Gene will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, June 23, at the funeral home with Reverend Raymond Kendrick and Reverend Charles E. Blevins officiating. Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

The family would like to thank the nurses at Memorial Hospital in Hixson and Ernie’s Angels for their kindness, love and care given to Gene during his illness.
