Newell V. O’Daniel, of Hixson, died on Sunday, June 24, 2012.  He was 87.

Newell was born in McMinn, Tn., and was a longtime resident of the Chattanooga area. He served proudly for our country, during World War II, in the U. S. Army, serving on D-Day in Normandy and was a recipient of the Purple Heart.  Newell was the former owner and operator of Dan’s Heating and Air and was a member of Idlewild Baptist Church in Athens, Tn. 

He was preceded in death by his wife, Pauline “Polly” Frank O’Daniel; his parents, John and Lula Benton O’Daniel; sisters, Hazel Bohannon and Inez Howard and a brother, Johnny O’Daniel.

Newell is survived by his children, Dennis (Ava) O’Daniel; Judy (Dwayne) King; Ronald O’Daniel and John (Katrina) O’Daniel; a brother, Ben (Helen) O'Daniel; seven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. on Monday, June 25, and 10-11 a.m. on Tuesday at the North Chapel.

Services for Newell will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, June 26, at the North Chapel with Minister Larry Clements officiating.  Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Newell’s name to the American Heart Association, 519 East 4th Street, Chattanooga, Tn. 37403.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 5401 Highway 153, Hixson, Tn. 37343.

Woman Killed In Early-Morning Wreck On Thrasher Pike

A woman was killed in a single-vehicle crash in the 1200 block of Thrasher Pike early Saturday morning. Soddy Daisy Police Chief Phillip Hamrick said a female passenger was ejected from the vehicle. City May Move Forward On $47 Million Wilcox Tunnel Project

City officials may move forward on a $47 million project to upgrade the narrow Wilcox Tunnel through Missionary Ridge. The City Council on Tuesday is to consider a resolution to apply for a $25 million federal TIGER grant. The city would still have to come up with $21,825,000 through "local funds or grants."
