A LaFayette accountant crusades against breast cancer by adding to the bottom line for cancer research.
LaFayette Downtown Development Authority selected Joe Moore, certified public accountant, as the July Downtown Business of the Month because of Mr. Moore’s self-described goal “to do more than being a caregiver” in the fight against breast cancer, according to the DDA Promotions Committee.
"For six years we battled the cancer that ravaged my wife’s body with every fiber of our beings until Aug. 18, 2010, when we lost the battle,” he said. “Now that Karen lives with Jesus, I continue to fight the war here on earth to help find a cure for breast cancer.”
“When I heard about the 3-Day Walk for a Cure, I knew I had found my calling,” he said. “The event gives me the fight I need to help fight breast cancer.”
Mr. Moore has raised nearly $40,000 in the last two years for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day Walk for a Cure, he said. Most of the donations have been local contributions, which he thinks is “phenomenal.”
“Walking 60 miles is hard, but I do it because I know it makes a difference, and I am committed to the cause,” he said.
Mr. Moore is coordinating with Strandz salon in LaFayette to host a spa day on Saturday, Oct. 6. Proceeds from manicures, pedicures, facials, massages, eyebrow shaping and hair styles will benefit the 3-Day Walk.
To participate in the walk, participants must raise at least $2,300, which is “quite challenging,” he said. He expects to raise at least $10,000 this year for the walk.
He is also a member of the LaFayette Lions Club, he said. He previously served as a lieutenant governor of the Kiwanis of the State of Georgia and has served on several Chamber of Commerce committees and boards.
He serves in several different capacities at his church, First Baptist Church of LaFayette, he said.
Mr. Moore gives his accounting practice and his clients the same dedication he demonstrates in his civic involvement. His business has grown by meeting clients’ various needs, he said, adding that cash flow and cash management are important aspects of any business.
His firm’s services include accounting, income tax preparation, income tax planning, payroll preparation, payroll tax services, bookkeeping, estate planning, business consulting, sales tax preparation and income tax preparation.
“It is my goal to stress the importance of managing cash flow in relations to the traditional income statement and balance sheet to all of my clients,” he said.
He strives to be available and readily accessible to clients and meet their needs in a timely manner, he said. He also strives to meet all filing date requirements on behalf of all his clients.
Mr. Moore opened his current office in November 2008, he said. He previously operated an accounting office in downtown from 1975-2000, and from 1985-2000, his office was in the same location as it is today.
Downtown is the ideal location for his office because it is easily accessible, close to financial institutions, convenient to other professionals and easy for clients to find, he said.
“The downtown business community is very important to any community,” he said. “It represents the character, the growth, the pride and the success of a community.”
He believes a community has only one chance to make a good first impression.
“If we are rundown, fail to show our community pride or generally do not care, then our community will develop the same attitude,” he said. “Visitors and potential newcomers will see that attitude and not want to be a part of us.”
Mr. Moore said his future plans are to keep striving to meet the accounting and tax needs of his clients. Through word of mouth and a good reputation he hopes others will want him to be part of their team, and as demand increases, he will add additional staff.
