Dr. Paul Shaw, candidate for Walker County sole commissioner, is asking for a debate with incumbent Bebe Heiskell.

During closing comments on Judy O’Neil’s “Night Talk” program, the retired LaFayette family physician asked for a “one-hour” debate, “one-on-one” with the commissioner.

He said, “There are many issues we need to bring before the voters - the need for an accountable, accessible, five-member commission, transparency, approaches to Walker County’s 44 million indebtedness, and more.

During the program on Fort Olgethorpe’s UCTV, Dr. Shaw also mentioned "what he believes were serious missteps that led to the loss of hundreds of Bluebird manufacturing positions, lingering questions on spending and lack of transparency on Mountain Cove Farms, and the need for a more open sealed bidding process."

If elected, the Desert Storm/Desert Shield veteran also promised voters "the chance to decide on whether to have term limits."

With no Democrats running in the general election, the July 31 Republican primary will decide the winner of the commissioner’s race.    Early voting begins July 9.
