Senator Bob Corker made the following statement today after voting against the highway bill conference report (H.R.4348).
"The conference report spends $2.5 billion more in fiscal year 2012 than was agreed to under the deemed budget resolution required by the Budget Control Act and fails to solve the long-term sustainability of the highway trust fund.
“Once again the Senate has broken the trust of the American people by passing legislation without paying for it and violating the Budget Control Act we promised to uphold.
The message this sends is that the Senate doesn’t have the discipline, the courage, or the will to do what we told the American people we would do to try to get our fiscal house in order. A lot of this legislation has merit, but we need to find a way to pay for it rather than passing the cost on to future generations.”
Senator Corker offered a point of order to enforce the Budget Control Act, but the Senate waived it and passed the bill.
