A group of Chattanooga Times Free Press employees have sent fliers and emails saying they are trying to unionize the newspaper.
The header says at the paper "no raises, no security, we are not treated like people."
The flier says upper management at the newspaper "is plotting" to cut additional jobs.
One email was sent through the company email account while managers at the paper were holding a large staff meeting on Thursday.
The group said they plan to set up a Facebook page for the unionizing effort.
A number of print newspapers around the country, including the Times Fress Press, have an layoffs due to declining revenues and readership. Some newspapers have moved to printing only a few days per week.
Leaders of the group at the newspaper said they are remaining anonymous due to fears of reprisal.
In the early 1970s, there was a bitterly-fought battle to unionize the News-Free Press, but owner Roy McDonald hired replacement workers.
The Chattanooga Times for many years had worker guilds.
Here is the text from one of the emails going around:
Subject: Job security isn't for suckers; you can have it too

Do not reply to this message. Do not reply to the email address contained in this document from your times free press email account. If you have friends or coworkers without email, do them a favor and print them a copy of the linked file. Use a personal email and do it outside of the Times Free Press. After reading the contents, you will begin to understand the lengths to which your employer will go to suppress workers. A witchhunt will begin to find out who sent this email, and threats will be made to intimidate you. Promises will be made to distract you.
Understand that this is the last time we will be able to communicate through your company email account. To add your email to our future mailings, you must take action and contact the email address at the bottom of page 2. Simply doing so will add you to future mailings where we will expand on the road ahead for the workers of the CTFP. We will launch a web spot with more information soon and we have a facebook page put together to keep you informed. We cannot do that if the company is able to block our free communication and suppress free speech. They will try, but we will go around them if you choose that.
Your job could be eliminated before you know it. Some of you reading this will have some knowledge of the content of the document. Doing nothing resigns many of your coworkers, and maybe even yourself, to be a sacrifice to management greed. The choice is yours. It costs nothing to allow us to contact you further. Doing nothing could prove very costly.
