Georgia’s State Park System was recognized by the U.S. Green Building Council and verified by the Green Building Certification Institute (GBCI) for developing the first LEED certified State Park in the United States. LEED is the nation’s preeminent program for the design, construction, and operation of high-performance green and sustainable buildings.

The newly-opened Chattahoochee Bend State Park near Newnan achieved Silver LEED certification for energy use, lighting, water and material use, as well as incorporating a variety of other sustainable strategies. By using less energy and water, and maximizing open spaces, LEED certified buildings save money for households, businesses and taxpayers; reduce greenhouse gas emissions; and contribute to a healthier environment.

LEED certification of Chattahoochee Bend State Park was based on a number of green design and construction features that positively impact the project itself and the broader community. These features include:

• Providing open space in excess of 21 times the building footprints of the project, thereby earning an exemplary credit;
• Reducing light pollution;
• Using innovative wastewater technologies to reduce water use by more than 46%;
• Optimizing energy use, at a cost savings of 19%;
• Using construction-waste management strategies to divert more than 62% of construction waste from landfills;
• Using more than 48% of construction materials made within 500 miles of the project site, thereby eliminating transportation costs;
• Providing low emitting materials by using low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) paints, carpets, sealants, adhesives, coatings, and composite wood materials to improve the air quality in buildings.

Chattahoochee Bend is Georgia’s newest state park, showcasing a spectacular tract of wilderness in northwest Coweta County. Located in a graceful bend of the Chattahoochee River, the park is a haven for paddlers, campers and anglers. At 2,910 acres, it is one of Georgia’s largest state parks, protecting five miles of river frontage. A boat ramp provides easy access to the water, while more than six miles of wooded trails are open for hiking. An observation platform provides nice views of the river and forest.
