Unclaimed Baggage Store Offers Southerners A One-Tank Summer Vacation Spot

Tuesday, June 05, 2012 - by Julie Shutley
This summer thousands of families will make Scottsboro, Ala., their summer travel destination to lay claim on what has been lost. Unclaimed Baggage Center (UBC) is a unique one-tank trip for Alabama, Tennessee and Georgia natives. Known as the "Lost Luggage Capitol of the World," UBC is a 40,000-square-foot retail store and virtual playground for treasure hunters to find unique items that have been lost or unclaimed by other travelers.

"With 7,000 new items each day, you won't shop the same store twice," said UBC's Brand Ambassador Brenda Cantrell. "It's what makes Unclaimed Baggage one of Alabama's top tourist destinations."

UBC is less than a tank of a gas away from Huntsville, Birmingham, Atlanta and Nashville. For families looking to plan their summer road trip, UBC has partnered with other state and local attractions to offer visitor's fun day-trip ideas and giveaways all summer long. UBC has a list of 20 partners, including attractions, restaurants and hotels, offering unique opportunities along your drive to UBC. "The U.S. Space and Rocket Center is excited to be a partner in UBC's summer road trip promotion. These one of a kind adventures are just down the road from each other and provide great fun for families who are ready for an out of this world road trip," said Charity James, the manager of Advertising and Social Media for the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.

Featured by MSNBC as one of the must see outrageous roadside attractions, Unclaimed Baggage draws over one million visitors a year. UBC sorts, cleans, refurbishes, and prices over a million unclaimed items each year. The unique products are acquired by purchasing unclaimed luggage after airlines have conducted an extensive 90-day search to reunite the original owner with his or her bag. . Of the billion or so passenger bags checked every year, only one half of one percent fails to meet up with their owners at the claim carousel and only a small fraction of this one percent are never reunited with their owners.

Departments at UBC include: Women's, Men's, Children's, Footwear, Formal Wear, Electronics, Sporting Goods, Music and Movies, Fine Jewelry, Books Luggage and the Annex which showcases household items, tools, stationary and other items.

UBC also has a museum of items that were too unusual to sell like "Hoggle," the gnome-like gatekeeper from the Henson movie, Labyrinth. Guests can relax and enjoy Cups Café that among other things serves Starbucks coffee along with Cups own award-winning chicken salad and local favorite Barry's BBQ.

Items that have come through UBC range from the wonderful such as diamond rings, iPads and high-end fashion, to the weird including moose antlers, snakeskins, kilts and even a giant turtle shell. The UBC website features stories of shoppers' amazing finds including a bride-to-be finding her wedding gown, and a collector who has bought 200 African masks. Location Of The Delta Queen Is The Problem

The Delta Queen is a magnificent part of history and in many ways I'm pleased she is in town. Having the boat where she is is the problem. The crew take many of the parking spots around the park leaving families to park across Frazier and schlep their kids, strollers and picnics to the park. You don't get fireworks ... (click for more)
