Southside Casual Classics Summer Lineup

Friday, June 08, 2012

Southside Casual Classics has concerts on the second Monday of the month, beginning at 7:30 p.m., at the Camp House, 1427 Williams St.  Concerts are free and there is a free will donation.  The concerts are designed to be informal but informative, and performers discuss the pieces and composers.

Here is the summer schedule:

June 11
Enjoy music of Triptych Winds, a woodwind trio comprised of Cindy Solfest-Wallis, flute, Teresa Spilko, oboe, and Nicholas Hartline, clarinet.  Triptych Winds formed in the spring of 2012, and is an ensemble committed to showcasing great works for this combination of instruments, from arrangements of the master composers, to modern works of today’s composers.

July 9
Consisting of two euphonium players, Jacqueline Miller and Shelby Walker and two tuba players, Angelo Kortyka and Kenyon Wilson, the Chattanooga Tuba Euphonium Quartet was founded in 2010. The Chattanooga Tuba Euphonium Quartet just finished recording an EP with plans to release the album for digital distribution before the end of the summer, featuring the compositions of Kenyon Wilson. CTEQ will be performing arrangements and original works for tuba/euphonium quartet by Kenyon Wilson, Michael Forbes, Gabriel Faure, and more.

Aug. 13
Brassworks is an outreach ensemble from the Jericho Brass Band of Chattanooga.  From this 30 piece all brass band with percussion, Brassworks was conceived as a smaller group who could perform in many different venues where a larger ensemble could not.  The purpose of Brassworks is to provide an enjoyable program of familiar and new music to all types of audiences.  This year, Brassworks has performed for school assemblies, churches, retirement centers, military occasions and community block parties.

The number of performing musicians has varied during the past 10 years from three to 15 or more players.  Performers for Southside Casual Classics on Monday, Aug. 13, will consist of six brass players, which has been the number for the past year.  Members are Dave deMarche on Horn and Alto Horn, Bill Kinnaman on Euphonium, Gordon Lawrence on Tuba, Lynn Moore on Tuba, and Carroll Wallace on Trombone and Euphonium.  Dan Hanson, on the Trumpet, Cornet and Flugelhorn is Brassworks’s coordinator, and much of the ensemble’s music is composed or arranged by him.

Music for the program will include marches, folk tunes, patriotic selections, pop tunes and hymns.
