Countdown To Kindergarten Kicks Off At Creative Discovery Museum

Tuesday, July 10, 2012

The first Creative Discovery Museum Countdown to Kindergarten event will be held on Thursday, July 19, from 5:30-8 p.m. This night at the museum is especially for kindergartners and their families. Countdown to Kindergarten will create excitement for “big school” and celebrate the rite of passage.

Families are invited to participate in special activities, including hearing and vision screenings for kindergartners by Dr. Robert McGarvey from Kapperman and White Eyecare and Dr. Shawn Lancaster from the Speech and Hearing Center. Hands-on activities involving colors and shapes will keep children engaged as museum staff highlight the skills kids need to be kindergarten ready. Checklists will be given to parents to take home with ideas for fun ways to develop skills during the summer to ensure their child is ready for the first day of school. A fruit wrap station with tortillas and cream cheese will be available for kindergarteners and their families to promote healthy food choices.

“Countdown to Kindergarten gives parents and kids a reason to celebrate the excitement over the first day of Kindergarten,” said Dr. Jayne Griffin, director of Education at Creative Discovery Museum. “Kindergarten officially marks the beginning of a child’s formal education and we want children to start Kindergarten ready to learn and succeed.”

Countdown to Kindergarten is a free event for all rising kindergarten students and their families. Reservations are not required. For more information, visit www.cdmfun.org.
