Joseph David Mays Jr., 68, passed away on Thursday, July 12, 2012.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Joe D. and Laura Mays of Soddy Daisy, in-laws, Lloyd and Ruth Boren of East Ridge, and brother-in-law, Ron (Toje) Boren of East Ridge.

Survivors include his wife, Patty Boren Mays; three sons, Jody (Wanda) Mays of Ooltewah, Jon (Kristin) Mays of Chattanooga and Ken (Betsy) Mays of Maryville, TN; three grandchildren, Julie Mays, Alex Mays and Erin Mays; one brother, Donald (Sue) Mays of Dunlap, TN; one sister, Martha Watts of Ringgold, GA; several nieces and nephews.

A dedicated Christian, he was active in church activities throughout his life. His roles included singing in the choir, teaching Sunday school, playing church softball, and serving on the board of stewards. Most recently he has enjoyed involvement as a member of Jones Memorial United Methodist Church.

An avid sportsman, he had a passion for fishing, golf, bowling, and softball. Through his involvement with coaching youth baseball, football, and soccer, he touched the lives of many children in the East Ridge area. He will be remembered by many not only as a coach, but also as a role model and mentor.

He touched countless lives during his 38-year tenure with the City of East Ridge until his retirement in 2008. He was a loyal and dedicated servant to the citizens and employees of the community. Initially employed as the bookkeeper, he rose through various positions of increasing responsibility including personnel director, city administrator, finance director, assistant city manager, and eventually city manager. He willingly served on numerous occasions at the request of the mayor and city council as interim city manager during times of transition. He was well-known for his open door policy and his focuson relationships with the citizens of the community. He will be remembered for his infectious smile, positive attitude, and willingness to help anyone in need.

Funeral services will be held at 1 PM on Saturday, July 14, at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mike Steele officiating.

Entombment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens, South mausoleum.

The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Jones Memorial United Methodist Church, 4131 Ringgold Road, East Ridge.

Arrangements are by the East Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist, 404 South Moore Road.
