Former Covenant Express Employee Dies In Tragic Log Home Fire Near Nashville

A former employee of Covenant Transport died in a tragic log cabin home fire on Wednesday.

 Matthew Brashears “Matt” Neal, 50, of Charlotte, Tn., was a 1979 graduate of Tyner High School and attended UTC.

A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Taylor Funeral Home in downtown Dickson, Tn.  Visitation is 2 p.m. Sunday until service time.

He was home with his wife, Mendy, when the house caught fire. She woke up and tried to rouse him where he was sleeping downstairs, then she ran out the front door to call 911, the Nashville Tennessean reported.

Their young children were not at home at the time.

A native of Shelbyville, Ky, Mr. Neal was the son of Morton and Marcia Moody Brashears.
He worked most recently as recruiting director for Western Express Trucking in Nashville. A die-hard fan of the Kentucky Wildcats, he was also a member of Charlotte-Fagan United Methodist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mendy Powell Neal, Charlotte; mother and father, Marcia and Morton Brashears, LaGrange, KY; his daughters, Alicia Bailey and Lillian McKenzie, both of Charlotte; one sister, Julie Berry and her husband, Dale, LaGrange, KY; mother and father-in-law, Charlotte and Mike Powell, Bay Minette, AL; sisters-in-law, Leigh Powell and Wendy Powell, both of Bay Minette, and Selena Powell, Fairhope, AL; grandparents-in-law, Rufus and Mary Hassell, Andalusia, AL; several nieces and nephews.
