Creative Discovery Museum Creates Buzz For Honey Harvest July 28-29

Monday, July 02, 2012

Creative Discovery Museum will present the 12th annual Honey Harvest, a “sweet” event that will be held Saturday and Sunday, July 28 and 29, from 12-4 p.m.  Honey Harvest, the only event of its kind in Chattanooga, is a museum wide celebration of some of the world’s hardest workers: honey bees.  Museum guests will be awed by the life and work of honey bees and how honey is made.

During the Honey Harvest celebration, visitors can make their own honey lip balm, beeswax candle and honey soap to take home. Tasting different kinds of honey, participating in honey extraction and meeting beekeepers from the Tennessee Valley Beekeeper Association are highlights as well. All activities are included with paid Museum admission.

“Creative Discovery Museum has been educating children and their families about honey bees with its annual Honey Harvest event since 2000,” said Karen Dewhirst, Museum Experience manager. “In addition to the opening of the Buzz Alley exhibit last year, a permanent exhibit showcasing honeybee as pollinators and the importance of beekeeping, Honey Harvest will provide a deeper connection to the hives kept by the museum.”

Hives of honey bees have long been a part of the museum’s exhibits.  The bees enjoy a habitat of wildflowers on the museum’s green roof and the specially created ecosystem beneficial to the bees. Keeping honey bees, installing solar panels, and maintaining the green roof are examples of how Creative Discovery Museum is making green choices for energy management and conservation as well as to educate the guests.

Timed Events:
Meet a Beekeeper at the Observation Hive at 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. (weather permitting)
Honey Extraction- beginning at 12:30 p.m., 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m.
Honey Tasting at 12 p.m., 1 p.m., 2 p.m. and 3 p.m.

Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
