Gary Starnes Has Our Vote - And Response

Friday, July 20, 2012

I have known of Gary Starnes, who is running for Hamilton County Sessions Court Judge, all of my life. Let’s examine what it takes to be an effective judge.

Gary is dedicated. He has known his wife since they were little more than children. This is a rarity and admirable in today’s society. Gary is a determined and consistent man who goes after what he wants and sticks to his plan even through rough times.

Gary has compassion. He has had his share of grief; yet, Gary remained level-headed and pulled himself through, oftentimes being the one to help his family as well. Gary remains fair and firm with those who have hurt him or his loved ones.

Gary is generous. Each year, he delivers Christmas gifts to those less fortunate and is active in many organizations for various charities in our community.

Who you would rather have on a bench if you were to come before a judge: someone who has not known hardships and struggled with issues in life or someone who is simply entitled to sit in judgment?

Please join my family and me on Aug. 2, and vote Gary Starnes as our next General Sessions Court Judge.

I met Gary Starnes by chance, over 22 years ago, when I was 17.  Little did I know then that I would be making a lifelong friend.  My boyfriend Chris (who is now my husband) and I decided to volunteer our time and coach little girls softball at Red Bank Youth Association.  We got lucky and Lesley, his oldest daughter, was on our team.

Gary stepped in and immediately began helping us coach that team of little girls and his support lasted over the next four years.  He always made sure that we had what we needed for the ball team and supported us on and off the field.

I have had the priviledge of watching all of Gary's children grow into strong adults, with integrity and solid family values.   I have watched Gary fight to help Red Bank High School (where both his daughter attended) have enough text booksfor the students.  He was always ready to donate time or funds to help the school with a project or a fundraiser.  Gary worked hard with the community of Red Bank to make the Kids Corner playground a reality so that there would be a safe place for the kids to play.   He and his daughter's names still remain on a fence post at the playground today.

More importantly than all of the above, Gary is a wonderful father, grandfather, and husband.  He is a great example of a father who loves his children unconditionally and selflessly.  He is patient, he is fair, and he is a good listener.  His family values, his work ethic, and his experience in community service will be a great asset to the Hamilton County Judicial system.

Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ... City May Move Forward On $47 Million Wilcox Tunnel Project

City officials may move forward on a $47 million project to upgrade the narrow Wilcox Tunnel through Missionary Ridge. The City Council on Tuesday is to consider a resolution to apply for a $25 million federal TIGER grant. The city would still have to come up with $21,825,000 through "local funds or grants." The city has already spent $175,000 on the project. Improving ... (click for more)
