Baylor Athletic Program Listed Top 25 Nationwide And First in State

Wednesday, July 25, 2012

A remarkable athletic program that has garnered 85 state championships in the past ten years has earned Baylor School a top 25 ranking in the nation and the state’s top spot in the inaugural MaxPreps Cup standings.

Using a formula designed to determine the top prep programs in the country, the popular CBSsports.com site recognizes the Top 25 high school programs in the nation as well as the top overall program in each state, the top boys and girls programs and the top large school, medium school and small school programs.  In 2005, Sports Illustrated also listed Baylor as the leading sports program in Tennessee, and in the top 25 nationwide

Along with 2011-12 state titles in swimming, tennis, wrestling, soccer, track, fencing, and softball, the Red Raiders were also nationally ranked in girls and boys swimming, girls and boys soccer, and softball.

“I am proud of the accomplishments of our student-athletes and coaches. It’s exciting that CBS MaxPreps recognizes the continued success and depth of our athletic program,” said Thad Lepcio, Baylor’s Athletic Director.

The formula is based on a team placing first or second in the state finals of a sport. Points are weighted based on the size of the playoff enrollment division, the size of state and the type of sport. Points are also awarded for inclusion in the final national rankings for that sport. Only the following sports were counted toward the MaxPreps Cup: football, boys/girls volleyball, boys/girls basketball, boys/girls swimming, boys/girls soccer, boys/girls tennis, boys/girls golf, boys/girls cross country, boys/girls track, wrestling, softball, boys/girls lacrosse. The sport must be sanctioned to be counted. Club sports were not included.
