Rebne, Oliver, Etter Tie For 8th In PGA Section

Thursday, July 26, 2012 - by special report to chattanoogan.com

FARRAGUT, Tenn. -- Ringgold's Richard Rebne, Niota's Jack Oliver and Chattanooga's Bruce Etter finished eighth here Wednesday in the Tennessee PGA Professional Section Championship at the Fox Den Country Club.

In a tale of two stories, Scott Moran, the host PGA Professional from Fox Den Country Club rallied from an eight shot deficit to capture the 44th Tennessee PGA Professional Championship. Coming off of the heels of a bizarre ending to last weekend’s British Open, a similar story unfolded at Fox Den.
Chris Stacy, PGA of Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap, Virginia entered the day as the only competitor under par, at -3 under, and held a three stroke lead over Richard Rebne, PGA from Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga. Moran began the round, hoping to capture one of the five qualifying spots for the Professional National Championship and surmised he was too far back to capture the outright title. In a strange finish, he found himself with the trophy at the end of a hot and humid day at the prominent Knoxville club.
As Stacy came to the 16th tee with a four stroke lead, Moran was putting out for a disappointing bogey to shoot -1 under for the round and finish the tournament at four over par. Joining him at four over par were the 2011 defending champion Audie Johnson, PGA (Lebanon Golf & CC), who shot a stellar -3 under par 69 in the final round, as well as Brock Shafer, PGA (Windyke CC) who carded a +3 over par 75. Little did those three competitors know what was about to unfold during Stacy’s final 3 holes.
Stacy found the green on the par three 16th hole with his tee shot, but an unfortunate double bogey narrowed his lead to two strokes with two holes to play. When he failed to get up and down for par on 17, his lead was down to one as he headed to the par five 18th hole. A classic risk reward finishing hole, Stacy’s second shot went too far left and he was forced to pitch out and hope to get up and down from 100 yards to save his par and claim victory. He hit a magnificent wedge to four feet, but narrowly missed the putt and settled for a disappointing bogey.
As Stacy headed to the scoring area, it looked liked it would be a four way playoff between Stacy, Moran, Shafer and Johnson for the title. However, in the heat and confusion from a disappointing finish, Stacy, inadvertently signed a wrong scorecard which showed him bogeying the second hole, when in fact he scored a par. Since he had signed the scorecard and left the scoring area, Stacy officially finished the tournament at five over par and would miss the playoff by one stroke.
That unfortunate event left Moran, Shafer and Johnson in the playoff which began on the par five 10th hole. Johnson narrowly missed his birdie putt and settled for par, as he watched Moran and Shafer make clutch birdies to advance to the 11th hole. On the 11th hole, Shafer burned the edge on his 10 foot birdie putt, while Moran drained his 7 foot birdie to claim victory, his second Tennessee PGA Championship in the past four years.
In addition to the $6,500 first place check, Moran earned an exemption into the 2013 FedEx St. Jude PGA TOUR event, 2012 Knoxville News Sentinel Web.com Open and qualified for the 2013 PGA Professional National Championship at Sun River Resort in Oregon, where the top 20 finishers earn a spot in the 2013 PGA Championship.
Also earning spots in the 2013 PGA PNC were Shafer, Johnson, Brian Wood, PGA (Plantation Golf Club) and Matt Brock, PGA (Lawrenceburg Golf & CC). Shafer and Johnson also earned an exemption into the Web.com event which will be held August 23-26 back at Fox Den Country Club.

Hefflinger Emerges As Braves' Top Power Prospect

Rob Hefflinger's pro career began like a house afire. But all too often, when the initial heat diminishes, all you have left is an ice cold player whose days quickly become numbered. For a time, the Gainesville born-and-raised outfielder seemed headed to the cooler, but instead, the 6-4, 220 righty hitter has emerged as the farm system's top power prospect. Hefflinger, the ... Roy Exum: So How Am I Really Doing?

I’ve gotten hundreds of jokes since Tuesday when I wrote about feeling a little puny lately and expressing my belief that laughter is the best medicine. After breaking some bones in my arm as I slept last week and having no idea there were already some other fractures, it looked pretty certain I had a case of “The Big C.” I’ve always felt that stands for “courage” but the medical ...
