Overloaded Vessel Results In Norris Lake Boating Accident

  • Thursday, July 5, 2012
A late night boating accident involving an overloaded boat sent occupants swimming for safety on Norris Lake in Claiborne County.

TWRA Officer Michael Cavins reported that on Tuesday, at approximately 10:50 p.m., a 1981 Glastron bass boat carrying 12 passengers capsized shortly after being launched at Hickory Star Marina in Maynardville.

The accident occurred about 200 yards from the dock when the vessel operator, Samual Talbott II, 35, of Maynardville, was applying the throttle in an attempt to keep the engine running.
According to witnesses, the bow of the boat lifted high in the water then came crashing down causing the vessel to swamp and capsize.  Despite only having four life-jackets on board, the occupants were able to swim to safety. Mr. Cavins also reported there was one child on board who was wearing a personal flotation device.

Talbott was arrested and charged with boating under the influence, violation of implied consent, reckless and negligent operation of a vessel, and violation of personal flotation device regulations.
