The Chattanooga Film Society and Mise En Scenesters announce the second screening of the POV Summer Film Series with the documentary I’m Carolyn Parker: The Good the Mad, and the Beautiful.
The film will be shown on July 16 at the Downtown Chattanooga YMCA on 301 West 6th Street at 6:30 p.m. The screening is free. The film is part of the long-running and critically-acclaimed PBS documentary series that features unforgettable storytelling and puts a human face on contemporary social issues.
Academy award-winning Director Jonathan Demme (Something Wild , Stop Making Sense) tells the story of Carolyn Parker, a lifelong resident of New Orleans’s lower ninth ward, who is fighting for the right to rebuild her home and community after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. The documentary is a vibrant character study of a courageous and resilient civil rights activist and caring mom.
This film not only embodies the best of the human spirit but also teaches us a lesson on how to face adversity. Said series programmer Chris Dortch, “Demme has always been one of those filmmakers who could hold his own both in the narrative and the documentary world and I'm Carolyn Parker is concrete proof Demme still knows how to make a powerful film. We're genuinely excited to have a chance to screen some of his work and hope folks will make a point to come check this one out.”
The Chattanooga Film Society is a non-profit organization that supports independent filmmaking locally and promotes professional film and television production across the region. Mise en Scenesters is a film club with the goal of providing more opportunities for people to see great films that aren’t likely to ever play in a multiplex near them. Officials said, "Though we are based in Chattanooga, it’s also our goal to spread the gospel of strange and wonderful cinema as far as we can through the exhibition of film, the publishing of film related writings and podcasts, creating films of our own and fostering an inclusive society of fellow film nerds with whom we regularly geek out."
