While Andrew Weathers (Boys 16-18s) and Katherine Holmes (Girls 12-14s) were crowned overall Chattanooga City Junior Golf champions Tuesday at Windstone Golf Club, Heidi Barringer had the comeback victory of the day.

Playing in the Girls 15-18s, the Cleveland High School sophomore posted a 46 on the front nine, but came home with an impressive 37 for an career-best 83, a two day total of  170 and edged Natalie Javadi (82-90=172) by two strokes for the title.

Weathers shot a 72-70=142 while Holmes carded a 78-74=152 for boys’ and girls’ medalist honors, respectively.

In Boys’ 16-18, Chase Cole (73-74=147) was the winner, Sport Almond (76-74=150) defeated Lake Johnson (76-74-150) in a one-hole playoff for the 14-15 crown and Matthew Ingram (78-78=156) was the Boys’ 12-13 winner.

Mary Melissa Manual (88-87=175) was the Girls’ 12-14 champion.

Comeback Kid: Barringer struggled early (7-over after two holes), as she opened with a double bogey 6 followed by a quintet bogey 9 (played the wrong ball and self-reported) and finished with a 46.

But she steadied herself, pared nine of the last 10 holes, including the final seven, for a 37.

“I didn’t do well on the front nine, but was able to string several pars together and played welll on the back and am excited to win the city championship,” said Barringer.

In the Red - Tuesday: Andrew Weathers (2-under 70, tied career best round at Windstone), Oliver Simonsen (1-under, 71)

Match Play at The Honors: The top four golfers in each age group for the year will compete in match play at The Honors next Wednesday and Thursday.

Best Dressed: 13-year-old Matthew Ingram who plays for LaFayette Middle School, must have visited the locker of former pro Doug Sanders before Tuesday’s play as Ingram wore gold, green and white plaid slacks on his way to the 12-13 title.

Known as a flamboyant, stylish dresser on tour, Sanders, a native of Cedartown, Ga., won 20 pro tournaments from 1956-1972.

Randy Smith: The New SoCon: It Is What It Is

About 10 years ago I first heard the phrase, “It is what it is.” I believe it was former Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen who used it a lot, especially when talking about a Volunteer loss. Obviously, he wasn’t the first person to use it, and he certainly won’t be the last. I believe it means, “don’t put too much into it. Or don’t place too much emphasis on it”; whatever ... Who's Driving The Bessie Smith Strut Into The Ground?

As the annual Riverbend Festival has come to a close I seem to be at odds with one particular thing and no it has nothing to do with seeing CeeLo’s rear-end. That one thing is the Bessie Smith Strut and the lack of what it used to be. It is just my opinion but there seems to be a driving force of setting the event up for failure and for what?    The event survived a ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: Me & The Ficus Benjamina

I got back from my two-week vacation at the Mayo Clinic "spa" late Saturday night and spent most of the day in the bed yesterday, nursing my way through the latest round of infections. All day long I was pretty miserable and, as I am wont to do with things turn downwards, look for something funny to ease my pain and anguish. So the Lord reminded me of my famous bout ...
