As IBEW Local 175 continues to celebrate its 100th anniversary, another centennial is taking place—the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Woody Guthrie. The voice of the workingman, Guthrie’s music survives and thrives today, simple, strong and bedrock American.

To commemorate the shared centennials, and to benefit the Community Kitchen, IBEW Local 175 is holding an open house on Friday, Aug. 31, during which noted professional actor Randy Noojin will present his solo show, “Hard Travelin’ With Woody,” which is set in a union hall.

“What better way to celebrate Labor Day, our own centennial and the unique labor legacy of Woody Guthrie?” said Barry Key, business manager for Local 175. “It’s also a wonderful opportunity to contribute to the Community Kitchen, an institution that continues to help so many people here in our area.”

The event will be from 5-7:30 p.m. with the one hour show starting at 6 p.m.  It is open to the public and free, but donations to the Community Kitchen will be accepted.  Reservations are requested by Aug. 28. Refreshments will be provided.

The IBEW Local 175 is at 3922 Volunteer Dr. For more information and reservations call 894-3557.

Roy Exum: Hypocrisy And Horses

I am still wincing over the fact a horrendous bill passed in the state legislature that would make whistle-blowers into criminals would have actually gone into law had it not been for Governor Bill Haslam’s eleventh-hour veto. Called the “Ag-Gag bill,” similar efforts in other states have also soured because it is no more than a Catch-22 trick to protect those who abuse animals, ... (click for more)
