Fleischmann Wins GOP 3rd District Race; Gardenhire 15 Votes Ahead Of Vital; McGary Wins

Thursday, August 02, 2012

Congressman Chuck Fleischmann retained his House seat Thursday.

In Hamilton County, he had a narrow lead over Weston Wamp much of the night, but Mr. Wamp pulled ahead as the final precincts came in. Rep. Fleischmann won handily in Bradley County and gained an overall district margin.

Scottie Mayfield was far back in Hamilton County, but finished ahead of Mr. Wamp overall.

Mary Headrick was the Democratic winner.

Chuck Fleischmann 29,943

Scottie Mayfield 23,772

Weston Wamp 21,992

Ron Bhalla 923

Mary M.

Headrick 14,780

Bill Taylor 7,339

And in a closely-watched District 10 Senate race, Todd Gardenhire was 15 votes ahead of Greg Vital - 7,995 to 7,880. Mr. Gardenhire, a Chattanooga stockbroker, outpolled Mr. Vital in Hamilton County, but Mr. Vital won Bradley County.

City Councilman Andrae McGary won over school board member David Testerman and Quenston Coleman for the Democratic nomination. It was McGary 4,302, Testerman 1,705 and Coleman 946.

Vital for Senate campaign officials said late Thursday they "responded to Election Day results with optimism, waiting on provisional ballots to be counted in the hotly contested District 10 State Senate race."

Mr. Vital stated, “Tonight has been exciting, and too close to call. With provisional ballots still out it is anybody’s race.” He said there will be no final number until at least Monday when Hamilton and Bradley County provisional ballots are counted.

“I’m so thankful to my family, friends and supporters” Mr. Vital said, “We have run a good race, and I’m eager to see what the provisional ballots tell us. Until then, we will wait and look forward to Monday.”

Rep. Fleischmann had been seeking a second term, while the 25-year-old Wamp was working to gain the seat his father, Zach Wamp, long held. It was the first political try for Mr. Mayfield, longtime spokesman for his family's Mayfield Dairies at Athens.

Mr. Wamp said, “I want to thank the thousands of people who voted for me today. What a rewarding experience it was to campaign for this office. I want to thank the people who supported me with their money and, especially, I want to thank the hundreds of volunteers who worked on my behalf. I wish the best to all of tonight's winners and will continue to be a voice for my generation as we move forward.”

Mr. Mayfield at 11 p.m. was still not conceding. He said, "We were first or second in 10 counties and dead last in one county."

At a celebration at the Doubletree Hotel, Rep. Fleischmann said he had not received a call from any of his campaign opponents. But he said he was congratulated by Governor Bill Haslam and many friends and supporters.

He attributed the victory to "tireless hard work and a fiscally conservative and socially conservative philosophy."

The Chattanooga attorney stated, "We just feel great about this huge, huge victory."

Democrat Taylor, who was in his first political race, said, “My congratulations to Dr. Headrick and her staff for her win in the Democrat primary and for the opportunity to discuss the important issues of the day throughout this campaign.

“I will continue to work for election of Democrats in November, and particularly in her race to beat Chuck Fleischmann in the 3rd District."

Scandals At Home And Abroad

Since my hip operation and time in recovery, I have tried to set aside things that are insignificant to me and to average Americans. Don't get me wrong here. What these people are doing (Bengahzi) is despicable be they left or right wing, and they have been doing it (both sides) for a long time. But the dirty deeds themselves carry little weight as to what they mean to you or me. ... (click for more)
