A nearby church is giving some relief for UTC's increasingly severe parking woes.
Jerry Harwood, executive pastor at First Presbyterian, said the church last year provided parking spots for the UTC students who worship at the church.
This year, he said the offer of $15 per month parking spots is being extended to other UTC students on a limited basis.
"They are coming out of the woodwork" to take advantage of the limited-time offer, he said. He noted that two students were in the church office as he was leaving work Monday.
Pastor Harwood said the church provided parking to about 40 UTC students last year.
It is opening it up to more students, though he said the church plans to keep about one-third of its lot available for special meetings during the week.
The spots would be good 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday-Friday. They would not be available nights and weekends.
In the event of a large funeral during the week, he said the students will be notified by email or text that their spaces will not be available during the funeral time.
Pastor Harwood said the church owns a parking lot at University and McCallie that it has turned over to UTC for its parking needs.
In turn, he said UTC allows church members to park on one of its lots across McCallie Avenue from the church on Sundays.
