The City Council on Tuesday night voted 6-3 not to tinker with a new auditor setup.
City Councilman Jack Benson had proposed changing the requirement for a vote to oust the auditor from four of five members to three of five members. He also wanted to add to the requirement of a "market rate" salary that it be the Tennessee market rate.
Several council members said voters had just approved the new setup by 73 percent and it should be allowed to work as drawn up.
Councilwoman Deborah Scott said the five accountants on the the board overseeing the auditor "are some of the tightest people I know. I believe we can trust them."
Councilman Peter Murphy, who voted along with Councilman Benson and Sally Robinson, said the new setup left the auditor "with not one iota of responsibility to the people."
The new changes would have had to have been once again submitted to the voters.
