I had the opportunity to judge the Texaco country Showdown at the Marion County Fair last weekend and I have to tell you – the competition was tough! Zach Dylan and D-Railed won the final round of the local competition and will move on to the State finals. I think they have an excellent chance, as this is a well-polished band.

Zach hails from the greater metropolitan Charleston, Tennessee area, just north of here.

His band D-Railed consists of Zach Dylan Owenby on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, Tyler Flowers on vocals and rhythm guitar, Anthony Barnett on lead guitar, Zak Baker on Bass guitar, Brandon Street on Drums and vocals, and Slaten Dooley on banjo and dobro. This band is full of energy and will keep you interested in the music from start to finish. They are a young bunch, so energy isn’t a problem. I really like the rhythm guitar player, Tyler Flowers. I can tell you, Tyler has never met a stage he didn’t like. He has fun up there!

This band is country with a twist. Basically, they do traditional country songs, but throw a little Led Zeppelin-type guitar thrown in on some lead breaks from Anthony Barrett. That part isn’t my cup of tea, but I did finally start to get the hang of it after a bit. The first time I heard them the lead guitar was way too hot and it took away from the performance. At the fair, they had it mixed in much better and it wasn’t as “in your face” reverb craziness fresh from the 80’s. It will be interesting to see how the judges at the state level take that feature.

Much of what the band does is original and it’s good. They play radio quality songs that I could see being played on air very soon. They also play a few covers, mostly of popular country artists. They do a great job on these, as well.

The band has been playing out a lot, including in Chattanooga at Electric Cowboy on Wednesdays. They are very popular in the Cleveland, Calhoun, Athens, Knoxville corridor. Their performance at the state finals for the Texaco Country Showdown is Saturday, October 6 in Lobelville, TN., between Nashville and Memphis.

Thanks, Sheriff

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department is very responsive and professional out in Apison, and I appreciate that.  We have some fine deputies serving Hamilton County.    I took a minute to call and tell them thank you, I hope my neighbors will also. Brian Wood Apison (click for more)

Roy Exum: Please Send Me Funny Jokes

It has been about 25 years or so since I had the opportunity to visit every county in the state of Tennessee and, as a volunteer for the American Cancer Society at the time, I met cancer survivors and listened to their incredible stories. I remember one man in particular who had bone cancer and one night he said he rolled over in bed and literally broke his arm in a very simple ... (click for more)
