Junior quarterback Jim Cardwell threw for two touchdowns and ran for a third as the undefeated Boyd Buchanan Bucs (3-0, 1-0) defeated host Silverdale Baptist, 42-6, in a high school football game Friday night.
In the battle of the unbeatens in 5-A, Silverdale (2-1, 0-1) scored first as senior quarterback Spencer Mossburg scored on an 11-yard run at 8:37 of the opening quarter.
Quick Start: The Seahawks gave their fans plenty to cheer about as junior wingback Tristan Huggins took the opening kickoff and raced 63 yards to the Boyd-Buc 26.
Six plays later Mossburg found the end zone.
The talented Bucs then scored four of the first five times they had the football and led 28-6 at halftime.
John Hale's one-yard run followed by Caleb Antwine's first of six extra points, put the Bucs up to stay at 7-6 with 8:16 remaining in the first quarter.
Cardwell found Austin Hall and Grant Mathias on scoring tosses and Rance Harden found the end zone from three yards out for the three touchdown advantage at intermission.
Cardwell, who threw for 240 yards (14 of 17) on the night, kept the scoring going on the teams second possession of the third quarter with an 18-yard run to paydirt, while Harden scampered 38 yards with 1:45 remaining in the third to close the scoring for the night.
"We moved the ball well on offense, but shot ourselves in the foot with way too many penalties," said Boyd-Buchanan coach Grant Reynolds. "We can't do that every game or it will eventually catch up to us.
Boyd-Buchanan was flagged 12 times for 125 yards.
"Silverdale was putting several players in the box to try and slow our running game, but Jim (22-7 as a starting quarterback in three seasons) responded by having a good passing night," Reynolds stated.
Call Me, Maybe ?? ... pop singer Carly Rae Jepsen would be impressed as senior running backs John Hale and Rance Harden asked the coaches .... "But Here's My Number .. So Call Me, Maybe ??.. ... the Boyd Buc staff called their number a combined 26 times on running plays Friday night for 210 yards and two touchdowns ... and the way the Dynamic Two in Boyd Buc Blue carry the pigskin they don't have to "beg, borrow or steal" for playing time, but with all the opposing boys chasing - they, with ripped jerseys and skin showin', run like crazy ... "So Here's Their Number ... So Call 'em, Maybe "
And when these two have graduated, the Boyd-Buc faithful will shout ... "Hey, Where Do You Think You're Going" .... "We just Met You" ... and "You Came Into Our Lives" ... and now ... "We Miss You So Bad ... We Miss You So Bad ... We Miss You ... So ... So ... Bad ..."
Fewest Points Since ... : Boyd Buchanan has allowed only six points in its first three games ... fewest points allowed since the Bucs opened the 1999 season with two shutouts and then allowed eight points to Whitwell (62-8) in the third game.
Lift Up Your Brother ... : In the pre-game prayer, the Ridgeland football team and coach Mark Mariakas were mentioned ...
Full House: Some schools moved their games to Thursday night from Friday to avoid the Tennessee-N.C. State game .... Silverdale had a full house on a night that is suppose to be reserved for high school kids to have their day in the sun or their night under the bright lights ...
Play Hard and Shake Hands: Players from both teams met at midfield and prayed together after a hard fought game.
48 Minute Man: Silverdale senior quarterback Spencer Mossburg playsa quarterback, defensive back, kicks off among other duties ... he played the entire game, rushing for one touchdown and recovering a fumble on defense.
Win The Battle: "The football season is a war .... we might lose a battle or two along the way, but I believe in you and we will do better as the season progresses,"said Silverdale coach Al Rogers. "We played well at times and we able to move the ball against a good football team."
Good Freshman Effort: "I am pleased with how our freshmen competed late in the game," said coach Reynolds. "They were able to stop Silverdale's first team late in the fourth quarter."
Good Defense: Fumble Recoveries: Spencer Mossburg and Daniel Guinn (SBA); Colton Robinson and Austin Bailey (BBS) ... Forced Fumble: Colton Rogers (SBA)
