Vox Arcana Is At Barking Legs Sept. 26

Tuesday, September 11, 2012

Flying Fingers Productions and the Shaking Ray Levi Society will present Vox Arcana at Barking Legs Theatre on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at 7:30 p.m.  Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door.

Review for Vox Arcana:
The critically acclaimed group Vox Arcana is a brilliant, spirited new music trio organized by percussionist Tim Daisy and includes two mainstays from the Chicago improvised music scene: James Falzone (Allos Musica Trio, Klang) on clarinet and Fred Lonberg-Holm (Vandermark 5, Wilco's Yankee Hotel Foxtrot) on cello and electronics.

Much of the inspiration for this music comes from three different schools of mid to late 20th century experimental music. These include the New York school of composers led by John Cage, Morton Feldman, Earle Brown, and Christian Wolff, the pioneers of the minimalist movement including Terry Riley and La Monte Young, and the early innovators of Chicago’s Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians including violinist/violist Leroy Jenkins and multi reed player/composer Anthony Braxton.

Adding to these musical influences, a great deal of inspiration comes from the world of visual art, including the kinetic sculptural machines of Swiss artist Jean Tinguely, Robert Rauschenberg’s use of non traditional materials, and the wall drawings of American Sol Lewitt.

Roy Exum: A Dose Of Foxhole Humor

During my quest this week for jokes and funny stories that would brighten my day, a surprising number of friends sent me hilarious samples of “fox-hole humor” and it made perfect sense. It was the most famous Marine – Chesty Puller – who once announced to his troops in Korea, “All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind ...
