The Cleveland State Community College History Department is sponsoring a lecture on the Battle of Antietam that took place on Sept. 17, 1862. The lecture will take place on Thursday, Sept. 20 in Room 127 of the Mary T. Barker Humanities Building at 6 p.m.
This lecture, given by Professor Neil Greenwood, is part of an ongoing series of lectures marking the sesquicentennial of the Civil War. The Battle of Antietam was the single bloodiest day in the Civil War, and it ended the Confederate invasion of Maryland, launched on Sept. 4, 1862. The qualified U.S. victory in this battle also provided President Lincoln with the occasion he sought for the implementation of his Emancipation Proclamation, which changed the nature of the U.S. effort to suppress the Confederate Rebellion. Finally, this battle, along with the unsuccessful Confederate invasion of Kentucky, put on hold plans by British leaders to intervene in the Civil War. This lecture is part of an ongoing series of lectures marking the sesquicentennial of the Civil War.
This lecture series will continue at CSCC through 2015. For more information on this lecture or the lecture series, contact Greenwood at 472-7141, ext. 300.
