LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN -- Two goals in the first 26 minutes of play were enough for the Covenant Lady Scots to hold off visiting Sewanee as Covenant defeated the Tigers 2-1 on Wednesday night at Scotland Yard.
Katelyn Newsome got the scoring going for Covenant (3-1-1) with a goal in the 9th minute of play. Ruth Terry played the ball perfectly into the box where Newsome gained control of the ball and got her shot past Sewanee keeper Olivia Glascoe to give Covenant a 1-0 lead. The score for Newsome made it two straight matches the senior has scored.
Later in the half, the Lady Scots received a bit of a break as Glascoe mishandled a cross and Jenna Vreeland was in the right spot at the right time to put the ball into the net from a few yards out making it 2-0 in the 26th minute.
Sewanee (2-3) got on the board early in the second half with a score from Bobbe Chaffin. Chaffin chipped the ball over Covenant keeper Hannah Bales for the score that made it 2-1.
Covenant withstood a couple of good scoring opportunities from the Tigers in the final 10 minutes of action. Bales finished with six saves for the Lady Scots, while Glascoe recorded five for the Tigers.
Sewanee outshot the Lady Scots 16-10 and in corner kicks 7-3. Ally Jennings, Bethany Logan, Hannah Weichbrodt, Mary Claire Roberson, and Amy Dykstra each had one shot on goal for Covenant.
Covenant returns to the field on Saturday when they host Huntingdon College at 5:00 p.m. at Scotland Yard. The match will be followed by the men's soccer home opener against Truett-McConnell at 7:00 p.m.
