The Baylor Red Raiders drove down the field on their first possession under Canadian quarterback Michael O'Connor to score against top-ranked Ensworth on Friday night, but wound up losing 42-17.

The Tiger defense stiffened and Baylor trailed 14-7 at the end of the first quarter. Ensworth scored early in the second quarter to move ahead 21-7. Late in the half, Ensworth had a fourth and two and got the first down with a run around the left side. The Tigers then had a TD called back for holding, but still managed to score to go up 28-7.

O'Connor sat out a couple of possessions, then came in to throw an interception at the Ensworth 32. The halftime ended at 28-7. Ensworth kept rolling, driving down the field in a seven-minute third quarter drive that made it 35-7. O'Connor led a drive to the Ensworth 19, then Rafael Gaglianone kicked his ninth field goal of the year out of nine tries. Baylor got a stop and drove down the field only to have a pass tipped and intercepted near the goal. Ensworth had a 99-yard run on the next play to lead 42-10, though a replay showed the runner stepped out of bounds..Baylor scored a late TD to make it 42-17. It was Baylor's second loss for the season.

Sequatchie County lost a home contest 32-27 to Chattanooga Christian. It was the first victory of the season for the Chargers.

Sequoyah marched past winless Cumberland County 48-0 after leading 34-0 at halftime.

Boyd Buchanan picked up a fifth win with a solid 37-7 win over Grace.

Red Bank was ahead of Hixson 35-22 in the fourth quarter in a game that featured a punt return TD by the Wildcats. But Hixson scored twice more to win in a thriller 36-35.

Silverdale had a 10-7 halftime lead over Coppin Basin in the homecoming game for the Seahawks. Silverdale pulled it out 16-14 thanks to a 95-yard kickoff return.

Tyner led East Ridge 20-0 at halftime and won 34-0. Tyner moves to 3-1, while the Pioneers fall to 0-4.

Rhea County was edging Soddy Daisy 7-6, but the Trojans came out on top 20-14.

Cleveland beat Walker Valley 56-28. D.J. Jones had 4 catches for 139 yards, but he was ejected in the first half and will have to sit out next week's game against Red Bank.

Undefeated South Pittsburg handled Marion County 49-21.

Signal Mountain, with only one win thus far, was edging Grundy County 16-13 at the half and won going away 49-19..

Notre Dame went up on Grundy County 14-7 on an 87-yard run by Taylor Bankston. The Irish finished strong to win 31-7.

McCallie spoiled Father Ryan's homecoming with a 31-21 victory. McCallie was up 21-0 at halftime.

Lookout Valley won over Whitwell 47-22.

East Hamilton had a  41-12 victory over Brainerd.

Howard broke a 14-14 tie with Central to win 20-14.

McMinn County defeated the Ooltewah Owls 35-24.

Polk County edged Sweetwater 26-19.

McMinn Central defeated Meigs County 28-0.

 

 

 


GPS Falls In Division II State Softball

Pope John Paul II scored the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Tuesday evening to beat GPS 5-4 in the opening game of the Division II AA state softball tournament.  GPS moves into the losers bracket.
