Lee Men Win Coastal Georgia Golf Invitational

Tuesday, September 18, 2012
Freshman Taylor Davis fired a 2-under 70 and earned a spot on the all-tournament squad in leading the Lee men's golf team to a first-place finish in the Coastal Georgia Invitational on a rainy and windy Tuesday.

Davis finished the 54-hole event with a 219 total. Coastal's Dylan Freeman posted a 214 to claim medalist honors. A 302 on Tuesday gave the Flames a final team tally of 884, three-strokes better than the 887 score recorded by host Coastal Georgia. Faulkner University (891) placed third.
Eckerd College (904) was fourth and the Coastal "B" squad placed fifth (909) in the 16-team field.

"Taylor (Davis) gave us a big-time round today," said a wet but happy coach John Maupin. "We had to have someone step up and he did it, just a really solid round in these conditions. It was raining the majority of the time and the wind kicked up quite a bit. We beat several ranked teams, including SCAD-Savannah, USC-Beauford and St. Thomas."

Senior JB Eksteen was second best for the Flames on Tuesday. After up and down rounds of 79-71 on Monday, Eksteen carded a 75 and finished the three rounds at 225. Hunter Vest slipped to a 78, but still came in at 224. Matt Emery, who blistered the Sea Island Retreat course on Monday with rounds of 71-72, managed a 79, but still had his team's second best total (222). Tyler Smith tallied an 80 and settled for a 228 total.

"All the guys hung in there today," noted Maupin. "It wasn't always pretty out there today. I liked how we hung in there and got the job done. This is a very competitive group, who should be in this position a lot during the year. It is important to close tournaments out, and we were able to do that today. We'll enjoy it, and then start working hard for our next one (Berry tournament on Oct. 8-9 in Rome, Ga.).

Thanks, Sheriff

The Hamilton County Sheriff's Department is very responsive and professional out in Apison, and I appreciate that.  We have some fine deputies serving Hamilton County.    I took a minute to call and tell them thank you, I hope my neighbors will also. Brian Wood Apison (click for more)
