McCallie Golfers Top Baylor

Blue Tornado wins, 10.5 to 1.5

Wednesday, September 19, 2012 - by B.B. Branton

McCallie golf coach Tony Meyers could not remember the last time a McCallie team beat Baylor by nine points or more in a dual match.

Playing a Ryder Cup format (match play) Wednesday at Black Creek Mountain Golf Ckub, the Blue Tornado captured six of eight individual matches, halved one and lost one for a 10.5 - 1.5 win.

"We played well today, won all four of the team points which was key and had a couple of guys rally late in their matches," said Meyers whose Blue Tornado team also won the annual match in 2011 (7.

5-4.5) after Baylor won in 2009 and 2010 by identical scores of 6.5-5.5.

The last time McCallie won a dual match with Baylor by nine or more points was 1988 with a 140-150 triumph stroke play). McCallie also won by 10 in 1968 (157-167, stroke play) with the largest margin of victory coming in 1940, 17.5 to 0.5. Baylor's largest margin of victory is 32, in a 297-329 decision in 2000.

McCallie was led by senior Andrew Weathers who defeated Mikey Feher, 3-and-2 in the No. 1 spot.

Comebacks: At No.2, McCallie's Gordon Hulgan was 3-down after 13 and went birdie-birdie-par-par-par to win 1-up.

Teammate Hal Boyd (No.8) was 1-down with after No.16, won 17 and halved 18 to halve the match and gain a half team point.

Baylor's winner was Nick Vandeventer at No.4 with a 2-up win against Case White.

"We have played well all year and have good team chemistry, but didn't play well today," said Baylor coach Gary Partrick.

"McCallie played very, very well today and this loss is disappointing for us, but not fatal."

D-II Region and State: The two teams meet again Monday in the D-II East/Middle Region at Tims Ford in Winchester with four teams advancing to the state tournament, Oct. 1-2 at Willow Brook Golf Club in Manchester

"I told our players that we don't hang banners in the gym for winning the regular season dual match with McCallie," Partrick stated. "We now go back to work and get ready for the region on Monday."

Possible Trophy: A Polly Boyd-Lew Oehmig Cup could be offered to the winner of the dual match each year.

Brooke Pancake Honored: Former Baylor four-time D-II state golf champion Brooke Pancake is one of nine finalists for the prestigious NCAA Woman of the Year Award which will be announced  Oct. 14 in Indianapolis, Ind.

During her four years at Alabama she led the Tide to the 2012 NCAA team championship, earned All-American honors and Academic All-America honors.

Scandals At Home And Abroad

Since my hip operation and time in recovery, I have tried to set aside things that are insignificant to me and to average Americans. Don't get me wrong here. What these people are doing (Bengahzi) is despicable be they left or right wing, and they have been doing it (both sides) for a long time. But the dirty deeds themselves carry little weight as to what they mean to you or me. ... (click for more)

Roy Exum: 50 Facts About Our Bodies

Maybe 20 years ago I became entranced by a book called “Fearfully and Wonderfully Made.” It was co-authored by a surgeon, Paul Brand, and a Christian writer, Phillip Yancey, and gave one specific after another about the human body and how only God could have created such a miraculous machine. Today the book is a classic and I have marveled ever since over how unbelievable human ... (click for more)
