A man caught digging artifacts on historic Moccasin Bend has been arrested by federal authorities.
William J. Thomas has entered a guilty plea to a charge of removing artifacts.
He agreed to pay a $50 fine and $450 in restitution.
On May 26, Park Ranger Amanda Defries at Moccasin Bend National Archaeological District said she spotted Thomas with a long-handle shovel and a sifter. She said he had dug a hole four feet by four feet and one feet deep.
Thomas told the ranger he is an avid arrowhead and relic hunter. He said he had been digging on the Bend for several days and found several arrowheads and some pottery.
Thomas appeared before Federal Magistrate Court Judge Bill Carter.
